Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is the main reason we went to Peru. It is an Inca city, dating to the 1400s and was built between two peaks, Machu Picchu (the old mountain) and Huayna Picchu (the young mountain). The ruins were rediscovered in 1911 by exploer Hiram Bingham. Machu Picchu sits about 7000 feet above sea level, and it is known for its terraces that line the cliffside, serving both as agricultural areas as well as preventing the city from literally sliding off the mountain. We took many pictures, yet the site is so impressive that even our best photos cannot do it justice. It just has to be seen in person to appreciate what the Incas were able to build.
